WHEEL CAMBER is applied to the rear wheels of a wheelchair. It can be described as an angling that brings the top of the wheels closer to each other. Sideways Stability; Affected by wheelchair width. The further out to the side of the wheelchair the front and rear wheels touch the ground, the more the chair will resist tipping over sideways.
Advantages of wheel camber
• The wider footprint adds lateral stability to the wheelchair.
• Redirects forces to soften the ride.
• Places the push rims in a more ergonomic position for pushing. It is more natural to push down and outward.
• Protects the hands when pushing in tight areas since the bottom of the wheels will make contact first with walls and doorframes.
• Less strain on shoulders since the plane of the wheel is closer to that of the shoulder.
• Makes turning quicker.
• Gives the wheelchair a sportier look.
RIGID FRAME wheelchair will consist of a welded frame on which the person sits. The back of the chair has the ability to fold down, and the wheels have a quick release mechanism to enable easy transportation and storage of the wheelchair. Rigid frame wheelchairs have less moving parts, they are generally stronger and lighter than folding wheelchairs and last longer. Did you ever notice that you never see a disabled athlete competing in a folding wheelchair? The reason is increased performance of rigid wheelchairs. But performance is not only important for sports wheelchairs, it is important for active everyday users as well. A well designed rigid wheelchair becomes part of the body of user allowing easier access and freedom of movement.
Advantages of Rigid Frame
• Reduced maintenance and weight due to lesser parts. Generally more durable and age better .
• Since the rigid wheelchair has fewer movable parts, most of the energy from the push on the wheels is translated into forward motion.
• Rigid wheelchairs are ultra lighter and more maneuverable.
• A lightweight rigid frame wheelchair can weigh as little as 5kgs without it’s wheels.
Who is the right customer for a rigid wheelchair? Someone who:
• Has good upper body strength
• Wants to be independent
• Is young and active
• Sees their wheelchair as part of the body
